The Life of a Disciple

Scripture
Acts 2:42-47
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.  Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.  And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.  Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Observation
What does the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ looks like?  In this verse it says that they devoted themselves to the teaching of the Word, had fellowship together, participated in the Lord's table, and in prayer.  They felt a sense of awe at the wonders and signs that were being done.  They had all things in common and even sold their property and possessions to share with those in need.  They preferred one another, served one another, and were giving and sharing with each other - they went to the temple, (church), and went house to house, ate meals together, and praised God . . . and the end result is that more and more were being saved everyday.

Application
I'm challenged by this verse to once again invite new friends to our home for dinner.  Hospitality is an important part of showing people love and kindness.  Eating is a fun part of life for me - I love to eat a good meal and enjoy it in the company of friends and family!   It's a bit awkward though to hang out with someone who we are just getting to know.  But as for me, I'm pressing past the awkwardness, the shyness, the condition of my home if things aren't quite perfect, and invite new folks over to get to know them, love on them, and have them get to know us.  It's a Biblical thing!  It's a Christ follower characteristic.  So, I'm going to do it!

Prayer
Father, I want to please You in all things.  I know You are reminding me to open my heart more and more to people.  Help me overcome some of the excuses I make and just do it!  I know You are with me to help me grow in some very important areas - and this one is a s t r e t c h!  Thank You for gently speaking to me about this and help me do all things well.  In Jesus Name, A-men.
